As the vibrant hues of summer gradually transform into the warm, earthy tones of autumn, there’s no better time to embark on a scenic journey Up North to witness the breathtaking fall foliage. Here in Atwood, we are nestled in the heart of picturesque Northern Michigan and serve as the perfect starting point for your fall color exploration. We’ve curated a list of our favorite places to see the stunning fall colors, all within a short drive or day trip of the Atwood Inn Motel.
Jordan River Valley & Deadman’s Hill
A true hidden gem for autumn enthusiasts, this expansive forested terrain is adorned with a rich tapestry of reds, yellows, and oranges during the fall season. For a bird’s eye view of the Jordan River Valley be sure to visit the Deadman’s Hill Overlook, located just a short hike from the Jordan River Pathway trailhead parking area, providing an unobstructed view of the forest as it comes alive with fiery foliage. You can see for miles from atop the hill, with opportunities for stunning photographs and moments of tranquility, as this elevated vantage point provides an unforgettable panorama of the valley in all her autumn glory.
A hike along the Deadman’s Hill Loop, which winds through the natural wonderland that is the Mackinaw State Forest, will immerse you further in a display of fall color. This 3 mile moderate hike is part of The Jordan Valley Pathway and connects to the North Country Trail.
M-119, Tunnel of Trees
Venture up US-31 about 40 miles to Harbor Springs and jump on the iconic M-119, home to the Tunnel of Trees. This scenic byway is world-renowned for its captivating fall foliage. As you wind your way through a canopy of towering hardwoods, you’ll be surrounded by a mesmerizing blend of crimson and gold leaves. Take your time to explore charming villages and local shops along the way, such as the Good Hart General Store and more.
Make a stop at Pond Hill Farm, nestled along M-119, where you can experience fall festivities like pumpkin picking and hayrides while savoring farm fresh treats, including farm brewed beer & cider. Visit the historic Legs Inn (open until late October) and enjoy their enchanting garden and patio area, with a panoramic Lake Michigan view and delicious authentic Polish food.
Boyne Mountain Sky Bridge & Zipline tour
Ride the Breezeway and head about 25 miles east of Atwood to Boyne Mountain Resort. Here you can take a scenic chairlift ride to the summit and walk across the new Boyne Mountain Sky Bridge, the world’s longest timber-towered suspension bridge. Soak in breathtaking views of the countryside in fall as you are suspended high above the tree tops.
If you’re a thrill seeker, the zipline tour at Boyne Mountain is right up your alley. Book a 2.5-3 hour tour which starts at the top of the mountain and will have you flying through a course of trees and slopes, offering an adrenaline rush amidst the colors.
Explore nearby Boyne City, known for its scenic waterfront, cozy boutiques & eateries, and outdoor activities. The Avalanche Preserve, which borders downtown, is another fantastic spot to witness the transformation of fall colors. There are 462 steps to the top of the overlook, with a rewarding view of the city and Lake Charlevoix awaiting. With miles of hiking and mountain biking trails here, you can venture even further into the warm hues of the forest.
Torch Lake
Torch Lake is the shimmering gem of Northern Michigan. While it’s known for its sparkling waters during the summer, autumn paints the lake’s shoreline with striking colors. Starting 5 miles south of Atwood at the north end of Torch, take a relaxing drive along the scenic roads that encircle the lake where you’ll be treated to a stunning combination of the lake’s deep blue waters contrasting beautifully with the surrounding foliage.
Brownwood Acres is a must stop on your tour around the lake. Here you will be transported back in time as you browse the shops and buildings on their property, including the historic Country Store & old-fashioned candy counter, and Antrim County’s first schoolhouse. Sunday morning is the ideal time to visit this treasure, as they serve up their famous fried cake-battered donuts on the porch of their Country Kitchen, a Torch Lake tradition.
If you’re up for some adventure, consider renting a kayak or paddleboard to get up close and personal with the fall colors reflecting in the lake’s pristine waters. Motor boat rentals are another option if you are interested in experiencing views directly from the lake.
The Chain of Lakes Water Trail
A paddler’s paradise. With several launching spots close by, including Torch Lake, the Chain of Lakes Water Trail offers a unique and exciting way to experience fall’s splendor. This 100+ mile inland water trail is made up of 12 lakes and interconnected rivers and is divided into the upper chain and lower chain, separated by the dam in Bellaire. With beginner, intermediate, and advanced options you can build your own adventure and paddle amongst the brilliant colors reflecting in the waters.
Pierce Stocking Drive & Leelanau Peninsula
The legendary M22 and Leelanau Peninsula are worth the drive from Atwood, and if you can set aside a day to venture here you will be greatly rewarded. Make your way west of Traverse City to Empire and hop on Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. This 7.4 mile loop is part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and offers several stunning vistas of Lake Michigan, the dunes, the Glen Lakes and more, all aglow with the hues of fall.
Continue to the Leelanau Peninsula, known for its vineyards and charming towns, to witness more of autumn’s brilliance. Take a leisurely drive around the peninsula on M-22 and you will be treated to a display of color as you meander through the rolling hills and along the shores of Lake Michigan. Savor local wines, dine in cozy restaurants, or explore more of the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. There is something here for everyone.
Glacial Hills, Grass River, Chairlift rides at Shanty Creek
Head over to Bellaire for more fall fun. If you are a hiker or mountain biker, Glacial Hills Natural Area offers an extensive trail network which takes you through a dynamic landscape of color. Here you will find yourself amidst hardwood forests, meadows, and wetlands, with several looped trail options.
Grass River Natural Area is another fantastic option for nature lovers seeking a quieter fall experience. Wander through well-maintained trails and boardwalks, with views of the fall foliage reflected in the serene waters of Grass River. Along with many other exciting fall programs, you can enjoy a guided fall color paddle. Explore the river by kayak and learn about GRNA’s conservation efforts, wetland plants, and wildlife.
Take the short drive over to Schuss Village at Shanty Creek resort, where they offer chairlift rides on weekends in October. Make a reservation and enjoy a 360 view of Antrim County’s spectacular fall color show from high stop Schuss Mountain. Nicely paired with a Fall IPA from Short’s Brewing Company, sponsors of the fall chairlift rides.
Be sure to visit our good friends at King Orchards on your way back to the motel. We love this family friendly farm, where you will find u-pick apples, fresh pressed apple cider, award-winning hard ciders and wine, a wide selection of farm-made jams and jellies, warm donuts and delicious fresh pies.
NoMi Backroads
One of our most favorite ways to enjoy fall Up North is to just get out and drive. There are so many lesser traveled roads around us where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the more popular locations. Ask us for more information at the front desk when you visit, and we will happily point you in the direction of some less frequented paths where our forests and country sides put on a wonderous fall display.
It is such a joy to see Northern Michigan ablaze with autumn color, and these are just a handful of gems in our area that light up in the fall. There are many more options for sightseeing, with a diverse selection of cozy towns, farm markets, natural areas, wineries & breweries etc. to explore while you are out and about.
